The 2014 Sochi Olympics

On 05, Mar 2014 | No Comments | In News, Sport | By Rory Brennan

After a successful 2012 London Summer Olympics, Rory was invited back to the NBC Olympic team to work at the 2014 Sochi Winter Olympics.

Rory worked as a Media Manager at the International Broadcast Centre in central tape. This required assisting both the EVS playback operators as well as the many users of the Avid MAM Interplay storage network.

NBC has always taken a slow and steady approach towards change, but now NBC has developed a tapeless workflow for their Olympics coverage. The magnitude of the tapeless service, supplying content to local users, users in New York and users in Connecticut, has provided a plethora or challenges.

NBC records all Olympic events into it’s MAM browser providing proxy versions that users can clip up rough edits from. These clips would typically be finalised in a more comprehensive editing suite. The shear magnitude of content being generated, transferred and consumed was mind boggling.

It’s been really exciting being in on the ground level of a large broadcast company developing new workflows using new technology. Whilst a lot of work still needs to be done, NBC is definitely moving in the right direction.
